The Birdie was a Justice Department-issued lie detector, new in the year 2101[1].

While it was mostly accurate, there were outliers with body chemistries at the ends of the bell curve who could display false positives. Glandular irregularities or training could both give false readings[2].

In 2105 / 2106, contraband Birdies could be purchased for 150 creds[3][4].

Before Chaos Day, at least 50,000 went to the iso cubes each year on false positives[2].

It was still in use in the year 2136, though Judge-Warder Dee used a talisman which helped him beat the birdie[5].

By 2137, approximately 150,000 went to the iso-cubes annually on false positives[2].
