Dredd's housekeeper, Maria, gives him a brainbloom for his birthday, not realising that such things are illegal. Brainblooms are plants that look like human heads that can be taught to imitate any sound. Dredd goes in search of the source of the plants and the trail leads him to Mrs Ma Mahaffy. Mrs Mahaffy had trained her brainblooms to emit an hypnotic humming sound. She hypnotises Dredd into killing himself in a road accident, but when he tries to ride his Lawmaster head-on into a truck, the truck driver manages to swerve out of the way. Dredd realises he's been hypnotized and returns to the old woman and covers her brainblooms with riot foam before they can start humming again[1].
