Everest was a mountain. Khumbu Valley lay at its foot[1].
Expeditions to climb by the direct route were lost on the mountain in the years 1924 and 1979. A failed expedition attempted to climb to its summit by the direct route in 1938. A succcessful expedition made it to the summit by this route in 1953[1].
