The initial working title was The Death of Judge Dredd and involved a horse, which matched when it was decided to rename it after a Johnny Cash song. It was also written with the artist in mind, and when Williams heard from a friend who had met Gueraan at a convention that the artist would like to illustrate a Dredd strip, Williams contacted him[1].
